Masker van een prinses     

Dit masker hoort bij de rol van de prinses van Kediri. Zij is de vrouw van prins Panji, held uit de Panji-legende. Zij wordt vereerd als een manifestatie van Dewi Sri, de godin van de rijst.      

Niet alleen de uiterst verfijnde gezichtstrekken, ook de uitwerking van de wenkbrauwen, krullen en versieringen in hoogreliëf laten zien dat het houtsnijwerk van uitzonderlijke kwaliteit is.      

Mask of a princess      

This mask belongs to the role of the princess of Kediri, the wife of Prince Panji, the hero of the Panji legend. She is revered as a manifestation of Dewi Sri, the rice goddess.      

The extremely fine features and the way the eyebrows, curls and ornamentation are executed in high relief all reflect the exceptional quality of the woodcarving.

Masker van een prins    

Dit toneelmasker hoort waarschijnlijk bij de rol van Gunung Sari, prins van Kediri. Het masker is versierd met halfedelstenen en glas. Op de vriendelijke mond is een dun rood lijntje aangebracht.      

Mask of a prince     

This stage mask probably belongs to the role of Gunung Sari, prince of Kediri. The mask is decorated with semi-precious stones and glass. A thin red line has been drawn on the friendly mouth.

Ramayana   

In het klassieke hindoeïstische heldendicht Ramayana wordt prins Rama verbannen van het hof van zijn vader. Met zijn vrouw Sita en broer Laksamana leeft hij in ballingschap, tot Sita wordt geroofd door de demonenkoning Ravana. In zijn missie om Sita te redden, krijgt Rama hulp van apen.      

Ramayana   

In the classic Hindu epic poem Ramayana, Prince Rama is banned from his father’s court. With his wife Sita and brother Laksamana, he lives in exile, until Sita is stolen away by the demon king Ravana. Rama receives help from monkeys in his mission to save Sita.
