Patchwork priestergewaad   

Van oudsher klimmen priesters bij volle maan met fakkels naar de top van de 2.393 meter hoge Bromo vulkaan om de gelijknamige vuurgod, die gelijk staat met Brahma, te eren. Daar brengen ze hem offers. Het priesterambt is erfelijk bij de Tengger. Dit priestergewaad uit de 19de eeuw is gemaakt van kleine vierkante lapjes stof die elk uit vier driehoeken bestaan. Die vormen samen het symbool voor de orde in de kosmos.     

Patchwork priest’s robe    

Priests carrying torches traditionally climb to the top of the 2,393-metre Bromo volcano at full moon, in order to honour the eponymous fire god, equal to Brahma. There, they make offerings to him.  Priesthood is hereditary for the Tenggerese people. This priest’s robe from the 19th century is made from small squares of cloth which in turn are made up of four triangles. Together these form the symbol for order in the cosmos.
