De Javaanse Prins Pangeran Adipati Ario Prabu Mangkunegara VII      

Zijn minzame blik en statige houding stralen autoriteit uit, de kostbare kleding benadrukt zijn vorstelijke status. Het portret is verrassend schetsmatig geschilderd voor de maatstaven van die tijd. Isaac Israëls is bij dit schilderij pas tevreden na de derde versie.

His aloof gaze and dignified pose exude authority, while his expensive clothing emphasises his regal status. The portrait is surprisingly loosely executed for the time. Isaac Israëls was only satisfied with this painting on his third attempt.

Gouverneur-generaal     

Hij draagt een goudgeborduurde jas en het lint van het grootkruis in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau. Gouverneur-generaal Johannes Benedictus van Heutsz is de hoogste Nederlandse gezagsdrager in Nederlands-Indië en resideert van 1905 tot 1909 in paleis Buitenzorg, nu Bogor. Hij is – onder de verantwoordelijkheid van de Nederlandse minister van Koloniën – officieel vertegenwoordiger van de Nederlandse koning of koningin. Van Heutsz is vooral bekend geworden als de persoon die met veel geweld de Aceh-oorlog heeft beëindigd. 

Governer-general  

He is wearing a coat embroidered in gold and the ribbon of the Knight’s Grand Cross in the Order of Orange-Nassau. Governor-General Johannes Benedictus van Heutsz was the highest-ranking Dutch official in the Dutch East Indies and resided in Buitenzorg Palace from 1905 until 1909, in the city now called Bogor. Falling under the responsibility of the Dutch Minister of Colonial Affairs, he was the official representative of the Dutch king or queen. Van Heutz is most well-known for the extremely violent manner in which he ended the Aceh War.

De Susuhunan van Surakarta (Solo) 

Pakubowuno X, de susuhunan van Surakarta, draagt talloze onderscheidingen, waaronder ook die van het Nederlandse Koninklijk Huis. Dit benadrukt dat hij een belangrijke partner is van het Nederlandse gezag, eigenlijk zelfs gelijkwaardig. Met dit officiële staatsieportret presenteert hij zich als een moderne heerser, net als de Nederlandse gezagsdragers.   

The Susuhunan of Surakarta (Solo) 

Pakubowuno X, the sultan of Yogyakarta, is wearing countless decorations, including from the Dutch royal house. This emphasises that he is an important partner of the Dutch authorities, even considered their equal. He presents himself as a modern ruler in this official portrait, just like the Dutch authorities.

Geschenken van de sultan

Met kostbare geschenken bevestigen de sultans van Yogyakarta hun band met het Nederlandse koningshuis. Hier een schild met sabel voor koningin Wilhelmina ter gelegenheid van haar inhuldiging en een sirihschaal voor haar huwelijk met prins Hendrik.     

Gifts from the sultan    

The sultans of Yogyakarta used expensive gifts to confirm their close relationship with the Dutch royal house. This is a shield and sabre given to Queen Wilhelmina on the occasion of her investiture, and a sirih dish for her marriage to Prince Hendrik.
