Rond 1920 trekken veel buitenlandse kunstenaars naar het hindoeïstische Bali; het leven is er vrijer dan op het overwegend islamitische Java en lokale bewoners bieden zichzelf graag aan als model. Rudolf Bonnet woont en werkt jarenlang op Bali.

Around 1920 many foreign artists travelled to the Indonesian island of Bali; life was more liberal there than on Java, which was mostly Islamic, and the local population was happy to model for them. Rudolf Bonnet lived and worked for years on Bali.
