Restoration of the spire
De Nieuwe Kerk needs you
Millions of people recognize De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam from the royal inaugurations and the wedding of King Willem-Alexander and Maxima. The medieval building on Dam Square has been carefully maintained for centuries. Groundbreaking exhibitions and numerous other activities draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
Every generation has contributed to the preservation of this monument. Just before the inauguration of Princess Beatrix in 1980, a major restoration was completed. And last year, 8 out of the 141 pillars received new foundations.
In 2025 the spire, the tower on the roof of the church, will be restored. The last major maintenance of the spire was in the 1960s. At the time De Nieuwe Kerk was closed for nearly twenty years.
This time De Nieuwe Kerk offers the public to observe the restoration work up close. We have built a large platform on the roof of our monument. For seven monhts, the public will have the one-time chance to climb the church roof for a unique view of the spire and the skyline of the capital city.
