Summer in the Church 2006
Activities, exhibitions and concerts from 6 May to 9 July 2006
De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam is one of the best known buildings in the Netherlands. An imposing monument with a splendid interior, it is located on a nationally renowned square. In the months May to early July of 2006 the church will be on show in all its glory: the monumental tombs, the dazzling choir screen, the stained-glass windows, the pulpit and the largest organ in the Netherlands.
Mozart
This summer the Mozart anniversary is being celebrated by four major concerts by Amsterdam choirs in May. On 12 and 13 May the Requiem will be performed by Phototonen, and on 19 and 20 May the Grand Mass in C by the Lelikoor, a premiere in Holland.
Sermon of the Year
Together with Trouw and NCRV De Nieuwe Kerk is organising the sermon competition 'Sermon of the Year' on 13 May. An expert jury will choose the best sermon from among several nominees. To date over 200 sermons have been submitted. More information: www.depreekvanhetjaar.nl.
Organ concerts
De Nieuwe Kerk has a long tradition of organ concerts. The two organs are played by celebrated musicians such as Gustav Leonhardt and Bernard Winsemius. On Sunday evenings in May, June and July, concerts will be given by other organists. There are also lunch concerts on Thursday afternoon and a special organ day on 10 June. Art as Well/Een hele kunst
The Stichting Art as Well / Een hele Kunst will be exhibiting very special work in De Nieuwe Kerk from Thursday 18 May to Sunday 21 May: art by people with a physical, psychiatric or mental limitation. The exhibition of about 80 selected works will later be seen in various cities in the Netherlands and finally at the European Parliament in Brussels early in November 2006.
