Summer in the Church
De Nieuwe Kerk Programme May-July 2006
Mozart choral festival: May 2006
starting at 8 p.m.
12 & 13 May 2006
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Requiem KV 626
Litaniae de venerabili altaris Sacramento KV 243
Photonen Vocal Ensemble conducted by Jeroen Spitteler with orchestra and soloists
To mark its tenth anniversary, Photonen Vocal Ensemble will be giving two concerts in De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. As part of the Mozart Year, their first choice is a much-loved and very well-known work: the Requiem. In addition, the Litaniae de venerabili altaris Sacramento will be performed. Although this work is a highlight of Mozart's church music in his Salzburg period, it is rarely performed in the Netherlands.
Photonen Vocal Ensemble consists of young, advanced amateurs with considerable experience in (chamber) choral music. Since it was founded in 1996, the choir has been conducted by Jeroen Spitteler. They are accompanied by an orchestra specially assembled for this occasion. The 36 members, who include some conservatory students, come from the best amateur orchestras in Amsterdam.
19 & 20 May 2006
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), starting at 8 pm
Grand Mass in C Minor KV 427 (reconstruction Robert Levin)
Ave verum Corpus KV 618
Lelikoor conducted by JanJoost van Elburg with orchestra and soloists
The programme centres on the Grand Mass in C Minor. The reason for performing this work in particular is the new reconstruction by Robert Levin.
This reconstruction fills significant gaps in the original score; it was premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York in January 2005. This is the first time that this version has been performed in the Netherlands.
Founded in 1986, the Lelikoor is a chamber choir made up of well trained amateurs who all have wide experience of choral music. The choir has been conducted by JanJoost van Elburg since its foundation. Numbers vary between 5 and 12 voices. There are about 25 members, and generally 2 to 3 singers per part. For this concert, too, an orchestra has been specially assembled for the occasion.
The Sermon of the Year: 13 May 2006
Together with De Nieuwe Kerk, the newspaper Trouw and the NCRV broadcasting organisation are holding The Sermon of the Year competition. With over 200 participants, there is plenty of interest in the event. There are almost as many entrants as there were for the first competition in 1997. At that time the event, which had been imported from England by Trouw, attracted a great deal of media attention, led to heated debates and produced over 250 sermons.
Veterans and amateurs, liberal and charismatic evangelical, Catholic and Protestant - the entries for the third Sermon of the Year cover the whole range of sermons in the Netherlands. Thanks to a few foreign entrants - three Belgians, a Swiss and an Australian of Dutch origin - the competition has an international element. Two candidates come from other religions: a Sufi minister and an iman who has taken part before. Remarkably, there are some competitors from groups who are opposed in principle to a sermon competition.
Two participants have serious reservations, they write, but that does not stop them taking part. After all, one of them writes, 'the jury must have something to judge'. The jury has drawn up a long list which was published on 18 February. From this the jury, consisting of Anne van de Meiden, Lenette van Dongen and Jacobine Geel among others, will choose the five finalists. They will then write a new sermon for the final on 13 May in De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.

Tickets for this event are available from Trouw and the NCRV.
